Our History
Control Techniques began its journey in 1973 when three innovative engineers, Ken Briggs, Trevor Wheatley, and Kevin Curran, founded KTK in Mid Wales. Their first major breakthrough came in 1974 with the launch of the KTK 415V DC thyristor drive, which significantly improved motor control performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.
By 1985, the company had grown substantially, prompting a move to larger premises and a rebranding as Control Techniques. This period marked the beginning of our global expansion, driven by our commitment to meeting customer needs locally.
Throughout the years, we have pioneered numerous world-first products, establishing ourselves as leaders in the drives industry. Our headquarters, manufacturing, and R&D facilities remain in Newtown, while our global presence has expanded to include 23 Drive Centres and a partner network in 70 countries.
In 2023, we celebrated our 50th anniversary with a short film that highlighted our history and future aspirations. Today, Control Techniques employs 1,400 dedicated professionals who embody our core values of innovation, design, knowledge, and expertise. Our relentless drive and determination have solidified our position as the top drive supplier, committed to making the world spin smarter.
